The European Union confirmed its support for the political transition in Sudan, considering that it provides a historic opportunity for Khartoum to build a peaceful, democratic and prosperous country.

This position came in a statement issued after a meeting of foreign ministers of European Union member states held today in Brussels.

The statement indicated that the European Union seeks to play the role of "a major partner" for Sudan in accompanying the country on the path of political, economic and social reform in order to make the transition process to democracy a success.

He stressed the need for all sectors of Sudanese society to be involved in the transitional period, especially women, youth and people in marginalized areas affected by the conflict.

The statement described the current civil authorities who are managing the transitional period in the country as "effective."

Last November, the European Union foreign ministers announced during their meeting with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdock, Brussels's readiness to provide financial assistance to support the transitional process and enable Khartoum to achieve the goals of the stage and support the necessary economic reforms.
