The Peruvian authorities have announced the loss of more than 900 women and girls who are feared to have been killed since the start of the closure procedures to contain the Covid-19 epidemic in this country that suffers from the phenomenon of domestic violence.
According to the official of the Women's Rights Division of the Republic Mediator's Office, Eliana Revular, the Covid-19 epidemic, which caused job losses and domestic isolation, has exacerbated, within three and a half months, the problem of domestic violence that was previously prevalent.
"During the quarantine period from March 16 to June 30, 915 women were reported missing in Peru," Rivular said, adding that "70 percent of the 900 missing women are minors," AFP reported.
Before the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic, five women were reported to be lost in Peru daily, but since the closure the number has risen to eight women a day.
Revular noted that the situation in Peru was grim due to the lack of a national registry for missing persons, so it is difficult for the authorities to track the crisis.
"We need to know what happened to them," Walter Gutierrez, head of the republic's mediator's office, told local RBS radio.
According to women's rights groups and NGOs, the police often refuse to investigate cases of domestic violence, make fun of the victims, or claim that the missing women left their homes voluntarily.
It is worth noting that 166 women were killed in Peru last year, and about 30,000 calls to report domestic violence were recorded.
The Corona virus caused the infection of 384 thousand people in Peru, and the death of 18229, knowing that it is the third largest country affected by the epidemic in Latin America after Brazil and Mexico.
